Northern Neck Electric Cooperative recently announced that A. Wayne Saunders retired from the Board of Directors after over 30 years of service.

Saunders, a veteran of the United States Air Force, brought his extensive financial and accounting knowledge to the NNEC Board of Directors in 1991. Saunders came to the Northern Neck region after serving in several corporate roles with Philip Morris in Richmond, VA.

He is a Certified Public Accountant and helped found MD Associates in Kilmarnock VA. He continued to serve as the Secretary-Treasurer of MD Associates until 2019. Saunders also lent his expertise to the board of directors at the Bank of Lancaster and the Bay Banks of Virginia for many years.

Hunter R. Greenlaw, Jr., Chairman of the NNEC Board of Directors, said, “Wayne’s contributions to NNEC have been significant and meaningful. His extensive knowledge of the communities that we serve has helped guide our growing cooperative.

We relied on Wayne’s deep expertise in accounting and finances to help ensure the co-op is bringing as much value as possible to the membership. I am thankful for Wayne’s service to NNEC and wish Wayne and his family all the best following his retirement.”

Brad Hicks, CEO of NNEC, said, “For more than three decades, Wayne has played an instrumental role on the cooperative's board, and has helped guide our transformation into the cooperative we are today. Wayne's expertise has made him an incredibly valuable advisor to NNEC. We have all benefited from his track record of financial acumen. Wayne’s insight and wisdom on the board will be greatly missed, and I am deeply grateful for the significant contributions he has made.”

In retirement, Saunders will continue to be busy. He and his wife, Susan, have two children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He will remain active in the community.
