Every organization has one, the “Johnny on the spot” who is always ready to help in any problem or situation. For NNEC, that person is Bobby Franklin. Later this year, Franklin will finish his career at NNEC with more than 35 years of service. Whether it is inquiring about the status of a restoration crew, asking for help for a parade float, or assistance with the annual meeting, Franklin is there.

Since 1980 as a groundman on a line crew, Franklin rose through the ranks and eventually took a role in the Engineering department to serve as a staking engineer, designing utility lines and services.

Franklin was promoted in 2019 to line superintendent, a role critical to the success of the organization. He is responsible for the daily leadership of the line crews, managing long-term maintenance and construction projects, and overseeing the restoration of power during major outages.

Day or night, Franklin’s phone never goes unanswered. “In 1998, I missed Christmas because of an ice storm, but my family understood,” he says. “You don’t choose this career. It chooses you. I was called to serve my community in this way. Our members are my neighbors, my friends and my family. Serving them is one of my greatest joys.”

NNEC Vice President of Operations Richard McLendon adds, “There’s nothing more important to Bobby than family, and he considers many of our employees and the members as part of that family. We are thankful for his service to our membership.”

Over the past few years, Franklin has volunteered more than 50 hours of community service while representing NNEC. He gleaned corn, handed out bingo cards, carried water, loaded vehicles, cleaned floors, whatever was needed to serve. In retirement, Franklin plans to spend more time with his grandchildren and continue serving his family.

“I will miss the people. I have made so many friends over the years,” says Franklin.
