In an undisclosed location near Richmond, Va., over 100 first responders, emergency response personnel, and state officials gathered for training. Over the last few years, severe winter storms have wreaked havoc on critical infrastructure, including the electric grid.

NNEC participated in the training with several other co-ops to increase communication between emergency officials and the co-op, as well as to improve partnerships and relationships.

The training also highlighted the increasing risk of serious injury or fatality to lineworkers through the dangerous practice of back feeding generators. If a generator is used during a storm event, but a licensed electrician has not installed a proper switch, the electricity generated could injure lineworkers or members of the public who encounter the power lines.
