All Points Broadband, Northern Neck Electric Cooperative, Dominion Energy Virginia, Richmond County, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Northern Neck Planning District Commission celebrated the initial launch of fiber-to-the-home broadband service to select locations in Richmond County that are part of the broader Northern Neck Broadband Initiative. Throughout July, service is available at select locations in central Richmond County so that All Points can test the network and service delivery before expanding to additional areas.

The initial “beta” connections that are now being made are the first locations to be offered service on the regional network that is being constructed to offer service to all unserved locations in King George, Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, and Lancaster counties.

Residents and businesses can now sign up for project updates and register to be notified when service is available at their location by visiting the APB Fiber website

“Last year, we adopted a new mission statement: to improve the quality of life in our communities,” says Brad Hicks, president and CEO of Northern Neck Electric Cooperative. “Today, we take a great step toward achieving that mission, and the first of thousands of members will be connected to high-speed internet for the first time. This opportunity for broadband access will truly improve the quality of their lives, and will also then improve the quality of life for the entire Northern Neck.”

Morgan Quicke, Richmond County administrator, performed the ceremonial first connection alongside members of the Richmond County Board of Supervisors and discussed the County’s long-term strategic objective of providing universal broadband access. “We cannot tell you how excited we are to see citizens being served and this project comes to life in Richmond County after two years of work. We are thankful for the work of All Points Broadband, Dominion Energy Virginia,

Northern Neck Electric Cooperative and Northern Neck Planning District Commission in building this project for Richmond County and the Northern Neck.”

“Today is another important step on our path to achieving universal broadband access through a unique regional partnership,” says Jimmy Carr, CEO of All Points Broadband. “All Points is fortunate to work with so many partners and stakeholders — and we are particularly thankful for the significant support we have received from Northern Neck Electric Cooperative to reach today’s milestone in this community.”

Dominion Energy is participating in the project by constructing and leasing over 400 miles of middle-mile broadband to All Points. “We are thrilled to see this project on Virginia’s Northern Neck moving forward and are excited to work with our partners to help bridge the digital divide in Richmond County and other communities we serve,” says David Walker, director of rural broadband at Dominion Energy Virginia.

Construction of the Northern Neck fiber network, which is a regional initiative coordinated by the Northern Neck Planning District Commission and supported by $13 million in funding through the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative, will continue to scale up throughout the region in 2022 and is expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2023.
