NNEC is proud to announce that it has selected Cheyenne Fulkerson, a student at Westmoreland High School to participate in this year's Youth Tour. Youth Tour is a highly selective program centered on teaching students the importance of being an active participant in our democracy.

Youth Tour is a weeklong trip to Washington D.C. where selected students get the opportunity to meet other students from across the country and engage in discussions with one another and elected representatives in the House and the Senate. Students are encouraged to come to these meetings with questions and topics they want to dive into with elected officials.

While the educational aspect is an important part of the trip, students also get the opportunity to visit many exciting D.C. sites. This year, students will be visiting different museums, Capitol Hill, attending a Nationals baseball game, and going on a dinner cruise. The hope is that these fun activities allow students to build a network with each other that will last beyond the week.

NNEC is proud to be sending Fulkerson to participate in this year’s Youth Tour. Fulkerson is a rising senior at Westmoreland High School and a part of the carpentry class at Northern Neck Technical Center. She is no stranger to getting involved in the co-op and the community, last year she participated in the Virginia, Maryland, & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperative’s Girl Power event and she often spends time volunteering at food pantries throughout the area. When asked why she applied for Youth Tour, she said “I wanted to push myself in using my education and experience at the technical center in a different way. The possibility of learning more about this industry from professionals was also exciting to me.”

Fulkerson is most looking forward to learning all the ins and outs of the role electric cooperatives play in government and the rural communities they are a part of. When all is said and done, she plans to share what she has learned with her friends and classmates right here at home. When asked what she was most excited about, Fulkerson eagerly explained how she loves trying new things and there are a lot of activities planned that she has never experienced before, including the dinner cruise, and meeting elected officials on Capitol Hill.

“The heart of Youth Tour is giving students space to interact and engage with elected officials and each other on topics of interest to them, says Glenn Purcell, vice president, technology and services for NNEC, We are excited to give Cheyenne this opportunity and the co-op cannot wait to hear about everything she gets to experience and learn during the trip. This generation is our future, and we are excited to invest in their success.”
