Storm Season Continues

August often brings some of the warmest temperatures of the year, along with an increased risk of thunderstorms and tropical weather. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep your family safe.

Before a storm arrives, charge all cellphones and keep flashlights, batteries and emergency supplies readily available in case of power outages and severe weather.

If you use a portable generator during a power outage, always operate it outdoors and away from doors, windows and vents to prevent deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

Also, never connect a generator directly to your home’s wiring unless it has been installed with proper transfer equipment by a qualified electrician.

After a storm, be alert for downed power lines. Always assume a downed line is energized and deadly. Stay far away, keep children and pets clear of the area, and call 911 immediately to report the hazard.

Late summer is also a popular time for outdoor projects and recreation. Whether you’re using ladders, trimming trees, or moving farm equipment, always look up and maintain a safe distance from overhead
power lines.

By staying aware of electrical hazards and preparing for severe weather, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable end to the summer season.
