At Northern Neck Electric Cooperative (NNEC), our mission is clear: to improve the quality of life in our communities. This mission is grounded in the cooperative principle of Concern for Community, one of the seven key principles that guide cooperatives like ours. Through our partnership with CoBank, another cooperative guided by those same principles, and their Sharing Success program, NNEC has been able to magnify its community support, multiplying the positive impact of our contributions across the Northern Neck.
Since 2012, NNEC has collaborated with CoBank to provide financial assistance to local organizations. CoBank’s Sharing Success program matches NNEC's contributions dollar-for-dollar, helping us deliver even greater support to the causes that matter most to our members.
Investing in Our Community: Where the Dollars Go
NNEC has directed these funds to several impactful programs that align with our mission to improve the quality of life in the Northern Neck:
- Rappahannock Community College: NNEC supports scholarships and programs that open doors for local students, giving them the resources and opportunities they need to build a bright future.
- Healthy Harvest Food Bank: With a focus on fighting food insecurity, NNEC has contributed to the Healthy Harvest Food Bank, helping to ensure that families across the region have access to nutritious meals.
- Randall "Randy" Thompson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship: In honor of a cherished NNEC lineworker, this scholarship was established to support students from the Northern Neck attending the Power Line Worker training program at Southside Virginia Community College. The scholarship serves as a lasting tribute to Randy’s dedication and commitment to the community.
The Total Impact: $163,000 Since 2012
Through our partnership with CoBank and the Sharing Success program, NNEC has contributed a total of $81,500 since 2012, with CoBank matching our contributions to bring the total to $163,000. This funding has been a lifeline for local organizations and has helped NNEC live out our mission of improving the quality of life for all our members.
“The cooperative principle of Concern for Community is something we take very seriously at NNEC, and our partnership with CoBank through the Sharing Success program exemplifies that,” says Rusty Brown, vice chairman of NNEC and a member of the CoBank board. “By combining our resources, we’ve been able to support local causes that truly make a difference in people’s lives. It’s rewarding to see the positive changes these funds bring to our community.”
A Legacy of Service and Support
At NNEC, we believe that our role as a cooperative extends beyond providing electricity. Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our communities, and through our partnership with CoBank, we’ve been able to do just that. By working together, we’ve maximized the impact of our contributions, ensuring that vital organizations receive the support they need to thrive, and for the quality of life in our communities to improve.
