WiFi Thermostat Program
NNEC is able to offer the convenience of the WiFi thermostats for free by reducing the electricity your air conditioner or air source heat pump uses during times of peak demand usage. You get the efficiency and convenience of the thermostat in exchange for increasing the temperature on your thermostat by 4 degrees (not to exceed 82 degrees F) during those peak demand times. The following items are required to participate in the program:
- Central Air – The thermostat controls your central air-conditioning unit. It does not work with window air conditioners
- Network – The thermostat must be connected to your Internet network. That gives you the ability to remotely adjust the temperature.
- You must own your home to have the thermostat installed.
- Compatible air conditioner unit – In some cases, air conditioners will only work with specific thermostats. We’ll be unable to install the new thermostat if that is the case.
*Residential members with multiple air-conditioners are eligible for multiple free thermostats.

Water Heater Switch Program
NNEC installs load management switches on its members' water heaters which are automatically operated during peak demand periods as a means of reducing its wholesale power costs. These switches cycle water heaters off during peak periods. Usually the switch turns your water off less than two hours, while the water stays hot for up to eight hours without electricity. Members participating in the load management program receive FREE maintenance on the electrical components of your water heater as long as the switch is connected.
Sign up for a load managment switch on your electric water heater by emailing Customer Service at CustomerServiceEmail@nnec.coop or calling NNEC's Customer Service Representatives at 804-333-3621 or 800-243-2860 weekdays from 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
Air Conditioning Switch Program
NNEC has a qualified HVAC technician from Utility Partners of America (UPA) install load management switches on members' central A/C units. When electricity is in its highest demand, a signal is sent to the load management switch on your A/C that will cause the compressor to cycle off during part of this peak demand time-period. During the load control period, the A/C compressor will generally operate 50% to 60% of the time it normally runs. Your A/C fan will continue to cycle air keeping your home comfortable. You don't have to do a thing and the vast majority of participants never notice the shift in cycles or a difference in the cooling of their home. This is another way members can participate in consuming less electricity during peak demand periods. Participation is voluntary and 100% FREE. In appreciation of your involvement, you will receive a one-time $25 credit on your electric bill after the switch has been installed for an entire cooling season .
